Frequently Asked Questions
What is powder coating?Powder coating is a dry paint application method where the powder paint is electrostatically charged and applied to clean metal.
How does it dry?
There is no drying cycle. The powder is fused in an oven at about 400oF for a specified period of time. After it cools, it is completely cured.
Will it chip?
The main cause of chipping for either wet paint or powder coating is improper metal preparation. However, it should be treated just like any good paint finish for longer life.
What preparation is required for a good finish?
That determination will be made by the processor. Some items will require abrasive blasting. Others require chemical treatments.
Are there different types of powder paint?
Yes. Powders are formulated to withstand differing environments, such as chemical resistance and exposure to ultraviolet light. The powder coater will help decide which type of powder best suits your needs.
What colors are available?
There are many colors to choose from several different manufacturers. They range from basic colors to brilliant candies. Though we have many in stock, you can order special colors.
Are there textured powders?
Powders come in several different textures, including some with hammer tone finishes.
What about gloss?
Powders can be flat, semi-gloss up to full gloss. Each powder is given a gloss number (less than 100%). The higher the number, the higher the gloss.
What about fading?
All paints and powders will eventually fade. However, some powders are formulated to withstand ultraviolet light, one of the main causes of fading. The powder applicator will help determine which powder best suits your needs. Also, some powders, particularly metallic, require a clear topcoat to reduce the rate of fading.
Isn’t powder coating more expensive than painting?
It may surprise a lot of people, but powder coating can be less expensive than many paints, particularly good quality automotive paint. Plus, it tends to hide defects in the surface better than most paints. That’s why it is the preferred finish for metal security gates and fences.
Is metal the only material that can be powder coated?
No, although currently our capabilities are limited to metal. New manufactured items of wood and plastic are currently being powder coating using UV curing technology.
